SNMP is a standardized protocol used to collect and organise device information on a network. It does this over UDP port 161 (Traps are received on port 162). There are three versions of SNMP. - SNMPv1 which is the original version of SNMP - SNMPv2c – This is the revised version which introduced some enhancements. Most notably the use of community strings for security. You can think of a community string like a password. - SNMPv3 – Which is another improvement adding authentication and encryption. This version is much more secure than the previous versions. A device that is SNMP enabled is known as an agent. An SNMP agent has several objects that can be interacted with. Some objects are part of the industry standard, and some will be vendor-specific for this device. For example, this router will have objects for, name, uptime, interfaces, and the routing table to name just a few. Each object is assigned an object identifier or OID. The OID is a sequence of numbers, which at first glance can look like an IP address. This is used to identify the object in a file called a MIB which stands for Management Information Base. To interact with these object, we need something called a network management system or NMS. The NMS is a piece of software that can communicate with the SNMP agent. There are a few ways the NMS can speak to the agent. The first way is by using GET requests. Get message include get, getNext and getBulk. They are used to actively request information from the agent. The second way we can talk to an agent is by using SET requests. A set request is used to change a value on the agent. The last method I want to talk about is Traps and Informs. Agents use traps and informs to actively communicate with the NMS. The agent can send a trap or inform to the NMS when an event occurs on the device. Traps and informs are two different types of massage but they both do the same thing. The difference is that informs are reliable. An inform message will wait for an acknowledgement from the NMS. If it doesn’t receive one, it will resend the inform. A trap on the other hand is sent and then forgotten. Even though informs are consider reliable, both still use UDP. #ccna #cisco #networking

How SNMP Works | Network Fundamentals Part 24


We can manage proactively, and we can manage reactively. SNMP is a protocol that can help us with both. A management server will use SNMP polling to collect information from devices on our network. This builds charts and dashboards to help us evaluate the health of our network. If a device has a problem, it may even send an SNMP trap to the management server. The server can then take an appropriate action, like alert us. SNMP information is stored in a hierarchical structure called a MIB (Management Information Base). This is a collection of objects called OIDs (Object Identifiers). These describe the information that can be collected from devices, and how to interpret it. When a poll is sent, the server will also specify a community string. This string is a simple form of authentication. Unfortunately, it is stored in plan-text, both in the message and in the configuration. There are three versions of SNMP. v1 came first, and v2 extended this by adding support for 64-bit counters. v3 added real authentication and encryption. v3 is recommended in most cases. Setup SNMP Daemon on MacOSX


In this video, I setup an SNMP daemon on MacOSX and query it from another computer on the same network. On the iMac, open a terminal and edit the snmpd.conf file. # sudo nano /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf Edit the 2 lines as I show in the video, but use your own community name, and the IP address/CIDR for the server/network that you want to allow to query the SNMP daemon from. In my video I enter the IP address of my raspberry pi, which already has snmpwalk installed on it. After editing the snmpd.conf, you will need to restart the SNMPD service on the iMac for changes to take effect. Unload the SNMPD service # sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ Load the SNMPD service # sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ Check it is running # sudo launchctl list | grep snmp On the other server, open a terminal, and try to query the SNMPD running on the iMac. # snmpwalk -v2c -cmycommunity . Replace with the IP Address of your iMac. SNMP works by sending messages, called protocols data units PDUs to devices within your network that speak SNMP, using these requests, network admins can track virtually any data values they specify, all of the information SNMP tracks can be provided to a product that asks for it. It is widely used protocol for monitoring the health and welfare of network equipment. MIP Management information base is a data base used for managing the entities in a communication network, most often associated with the simple network management protocol, the term is also used more generically in contexts such as in OSI/IOS network management model. Here in our network, we have to networks, the interfaces facing the switch are configured. Configure SNMP: On Router1: # snmp-server community read ro # snmp-server community write wr On Router2 # snmp-server community read ro # snmp-server community write wr On the PC Go to the MIB browser  On the address bar type  On the read community bar type read  On the write community type write  Snmp version 2  Then click ok On the snmp MIBs tree Expand the tree by clicking on the arrow  MIB tree  Router_std MIBs  .iso  .org  .dod  Internet  Mgmt.  .mib-2  System  Here you can click on the sysUpTime,  Make sure operation on the upper right is set to GET and then click GO. This would tell you how much time the system was up Highlight the system, then click GO, this would show the system name. Clicking on the interfaces, then highlighting innumber, this would show how many interfaces for the system. If you click back on the sysname, then click on the operation and scroll down to SET, a window will pop up, On the data type, choose cotetstring, then on the value bar type the desire name you want for the router, for example R1, then hit ok, then hit go, it will change the router name to R1. On the physical router, click enter, you will notice it changed the hostname to R1. Do the same on Router 2.
