Benefits of this algorithm is that it is highly CPU efficient and adds (almost) no latency. The seven models available are based on real analog gear, individually measured in two dimensions; gain responses (-inf dB to +6 dB) at the frequency spectrum 20Hz to 20kHz. This data is used to transform input audio to output audio. A four-band spectral drive allows you to let the unit work even more.

This video shows you the results that you will get and let's you decide for you own if you really should get a reamp box or plug your line output strait into your guitar amp! (That's not what your suppose to do, but this video shows what it sounds like) I was personally surprised how well the JDI worked when using the padded XLR cable. Placing the pad after your digital interface allows you to run a hotter signal out of the recording interface, thus giving you a little better resolution and less noise. The padded cable allows you to not overload the transformer during the process (Which is really only designed to take lower signals). I used the padded cable only, and did not use the on board pad that the JDI has. This was to proove that any passive DI box would work in the same way, and that I'm not endorsing that you must go buy the exact gear that I use to use the technique. I also was surprised that there was a difference in noise floor from the two adapters. You can hear the difference in the first example of just the noise floor with no track playing. All of the DI options checked out to be the same output at the amp, using a dB meter. I used a test tone about a foot out from the amp, and they all measured to be right at 118 dB. This is how I got my figures for how much I needed to attenuate the signal in the DAW. I understand that the impedance might have played a role and a more accurate way to measure output would have been to measure the voltage on the guitar cable itself rather than plugging it into a guitar amp. But regardless, the amp is matched very close, and after all you should understand how to adjust the volume to level match anyway. All the DI boxes are passive, and the reamp box is passive as well.

It may be a basic part of your recording process already, or it might be something that you’re just starting to dip your toes into. Even if you’re deep into the reamping game, it’s always good to get a debrief and reminder on why processes help elevate your workflow in the studio. So get ready, because we’re going to go over the basics, process, and benefits of reamping, and why it could be the very thing that elevates your creative process. 3 Big Reasons Why We Reamp 1. 🎸 We reamp so we can focus on our playing first. Think about it to get that “perfect” part, we want to focus on things like feel, tone, and quality performance before anything else. Once we have those, we can have a ton of fun hearing ourselves play it back and fiddling with amps and pedals while we sip a cup of our favorite tea (or another drink of choice). 2. ⌚️ We reamp when we’re in a time crunch. When you’re a producer working with an artist, we should remember that it’s always best practice to split the musician’s signal with a DI to capture a clean recording, especially when they have limited time or budget with you. But when you know you can reamp after, setting them up with a basic amp, effect or modeling plug-in allows them to be in the zone and focus on the quality of parts while recording. That alleviates the stress and pressure of getting the “perfect” sound, which can be accomplished by reamping their direct signal… after they’re done. 3. 💻 We reamp to leave more control for the producer. As multi-instrumentalists and remote studio musicians, we might not know what sound our producer is looking for. Nailing our performance through a DI allows us the mental and emotional freedom to work with their input, and finding those sounds via different amps and pedals, rather than playing it over 20 different times. Additionally, if you don’t have the proper set-up for that producer, they can reamp your direct performance that you worked hard on. Reamping leaves you a ton of options to try out sounds and have fun with the parts you recorded once you get it nailed down. It’s great for flow, and for when you’re working by yourself on parts. With reamping, you can go into a song trying to sound like The Meters, and end up leaving sounding like Rage Against the Machine. A re-amp box is a unit that can enable you to record raw tracks (DI) to your DAW and then to re-amp at a later date eg. using a guitar amp, or guitar pedals to enhance/ change the sound. Read: 🤍 Welcome to another Dojo! This time I’m going to show you how to reamp your guitar and explore some creative ways you can re-amps other tracks as well (soft synths, vocals, drums, etc.). In my earlier column “Why Guitarists Shouldn’t Diss DIs,” I mentioned the benefits of using a DI for creative recording. If you have a DI box, dust it off! You’ll need it when I show you how to get more out of your DI-recorded guitar and bass tracks by reamping them into your pedals and amps to capture new perspectives and even add some new reverberant spaces. Tighten up your belts, the Dojo is now open. To begin, you’re going to need a reamp box such as the Radial JCR Studio Reamper ($229 street) and most likely a TRS-to-male XLR cable (like the Hosa HSX-003, $11 street). I like passive re-amp boxes because they don’t require external power and are easy to move around. Some would argue that passive models loose signal strength, which is true, but how many boost/overdrive pedals do we guitarists have? At least one, right? Put one after the reamp box and before your amp. Boom. Problem solved, and you can drive your amp even harder. Otherwise, you’re going to shell out more dinero for active reamp boxes, which isn’t really necessary, and I like the inherent lo-fi nature of this process. Reamping is a two-part endeavor. The first part involves using a DI box to record the guitar directly into your DAW. If you’re unsure how to do this, I recommend going online and reading my Dojo article mentioned above. It’s very easy and straightforward. The second part involves routing the DI-recorded guitar track out of your DAW and into your reamp pedal. Depending on your interface, you might need the TRS-to-male XLR cable previously mentioned.
